Great Masurian Lakes- more information here and in Wikipedia. Masuria is an area in northeastern Poland. The name comes from the ethnic name of Polish settlers from Masovia called Mazurs, who resettled the area following the bloody conquest of the Old Prussian provinces of Pomesania, Pogesania, Galindia and Bartia by the Teutonic Knights. Masurian Lakeland are known in Polish as "land of a thousand lakes". The bigest lake is Sniardwy 106,6 km2. Wigry Lake, located in Augustowska Forest, is one of the biggest and deepest lakes in Poland. Wigry together with Czarna Hancza constitute ecosystems including varied habitats of different water organisms. Masurian is the paradise for sailors, hikers, anglers, canoeists and also photographers. |
